Artist Statement

I was 6 years old when I got my first camera
and became the designated documenter for my
family. I realized then that life is more fun with
a camera. Attending even the the most tedious
event, from the 4th grade mother-daughter field
hockey game to a 4-hour college graduation
ceremony, becomes more entertaining when you
simultaneously edit the experience, highlighting
the more amusing aspects.

Always feeling a little out of place in my "regular"
life, photography allows me to become part of
worlds which are more exotic, colorful and lush,
and where, for some reason, I feel more comfortable.
In much of my work, I am drawn to people and
places that represent a demographic slice as different
as possible from mine. Whether I am travelling far
away or only to the Hispanic or West Indian neighborhood
grocery store, my camera allows me to be part of
livelier, less regimented worlds.
